Kathmandu: Mayor Balendra Shah of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has earned a place on the prestigious 2023 TIME100 Next list, which recognizes emerging leaders from around the world.

Shah, who assumed the role of KMC's mayor following his victory in the 2079 local elections, is among the 100 individuals featured on the 2023 TIME100 Next list.

At the age of 33, Shah, who holds a master's degree in structural engineering, ran as an independent candidate and effectively utilized social media platforms such as TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram to tap into voter discontent with the existing political landscape. This led to what has been referred to as the "Balen effect," resulting in the success of up to 385 independent candidates who triumphed over seasoned politicians in the local elections last spring, as reported by the magazine.

In a city that is still grappling with the aftermath of a devastating earthquake in 2015, Shah's campaign centered on straightforward yet critically needed pledges, including improved waste management and sanitation, access to safe drinking water, clean roads, and the preservation of cultural heritage alongside urban development.

His efforts to fulfill these promises have not been without scrutiny, especially concerning their impact on the city's impoverished communities and their reliance on the demolition of structures deemed illegal. Since assuming office, Mayor Shah has also entered into agreements with officials to optimize landfill sites and has announced plans to segregate and properly dispose of non-degradable waste.

Mayor Balendra Shah's recognition on the TIME100 Next list underscores his growing influence and innovative approach to addressing critical urban challenges in Kathmandu. It signifies a commitment to positive change and progress in the metropolitan area under his leadership.
